Longleaf Pine
Program Overview
Engaging Landowners Across North Alabama
Through technical assistance, workshops, and hands-on guidance, we help landowners implement proven management practices such as prescribed fire, reforestation, invasive species control, and other site-specific improvements. These practices strengthen forest health, improve wildlife habitat, enhance resilience to pests and changing conditions, and support the long-term sustainability of working forests.
Whether your goals include wildlife, recreation, timber production, or leaving a legacy, Alabama Forestry Foundation works alongside you to develop practical management strategies that protect one of Alabama’s most iconic forest ecosystems while supporting your vision for the future.

Longleaf Pine Sustainability
Alabama Forestry Foundation partners with private landowners to restore, establish, and steward longleaf pine forests across Alabama’s working lands. Once covering millions of acres across the Southeast, longleaf pine ecosystems support exceptional biodiversity, resilient forests, and productive landscapes that benefit both people and wildlife.
Coastal Longleaf projects focus on the Flatwoods and Coastal Plain regions of South Alabama, where longleaf pine once dominated the landscape. Working with private landowners, these projects restore open pine savannas through reforestation, frequent prescribed fire, invasive species control, and habitat enhancement.
Healthy coastal longleaf forests support some of the Southeast’s most diverse plant and wildlife communities while creating resilient forest systems capable of adapting to changing conditions. These restoration efforts help landowners maintain productive working forests that balance conservation, recreation, and long-term management objectives.
Montane Longleaf projects operate in Alabama’s upland and mountain regions, where remaining longleaf forests occur in smaller, often fragmented landscapes. Alabama Forestry Foundation collaborates with landowners, industry partners, and conservation organizations to restore and expand these unique ecosystems across working forests.
Using tools such as prescribed fire, reforestation, and invasive species management, these projects improve forest condition while supporting economically viable land management. Restoration efforts also benefit rare and at-risk species that depend on montane longleaf habitat, helping landowners contribute to conservation goals while strengthening the long-term health and productivity of their forests.
