Wood Products, Design, & Construction

It Starts with Healthy Forests

Building a More Sustainable Future

Every building begins with a material choice. By choosing wood from responsibly managed forests, architects, builders, developers, and property owners can help support healthy forests, strengthen rural economies, and reduce the environmental impact of the built environment.

Alabama Forestry Foundation works to connect the forestry and design communities through education, outreach, and collaboration. By helping design professionals better understand sustainable forestry, responsible wood sourcing, and innovative building materials, we strengthen the connection between healthy forests and the communities they support.

Working forests provide more than renewable building materials. They protect clean water, create wildlife habitat, support thousands of jobs in Alabama, and encourage landowners to keep forests as forests. Strong markets for sustainably produced wood help ensure these forests remain healthy, productive, and resilient for generations to come.

Sustainability

Why Wood Matters

Wood is one of the few renewable building materials available today. When sourced from responsibly managed forests, wood products help:

  • Support healthy, working forests
  • Store carbon throughout the life of a building
  • Encourage long-term forest stewardship
  • Strengthen local economies and rural communities
  • Reduce reliance on more carbon-intensive building materials

Industry Professionals

Connecting Forestry & Design

Alabama Forestry Foundation works with architects, engineers, builders, educators, and students to increase understanding of sustainable forestry and modern wood construction. Through presentations, partnerships, educational programs, and real-world case studies, we help bridge the gap between the forest and the finished building.

Whether introducing architecture students to mass timber, collaborating with industry partners, or connecting professionals with forestry resources, our goal is to ensure the next generation of designers understands the environmental and economic value of Alabama’s working forests.

Testimonials

Aaron Paul Brakke, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture & Interior Design:

Thank you for the outstanding educational tour. It was a remarkable experience for our Samford University faculty and students. I was delighted by how well the idea of environmental stewardship was carried throughout each activity. The well-curated panel traced the full arc from planting to production. The speakers cultivated a real awareness of the industry by describing what responsible forest management and harvesting looks like in Alabama. Seeing Alabama’s most significant mass-timber project under construction was especially meaningful. We left inspired and wishing we’d had more time.

Gorham Bird, Auburn University, 2026:

Thank you again for an excellent tour. I heard multiple students comment on how impactful it was in helping them understand sustainability and the true scale of wood products. A very successful experience.

Derek Ratchford, SmartLam, 2026:

It was a pleasure to partner in hosting the Auburn architecture students. These tours are an important investment in the future, and we’re grateful to play a part.
