Program Overview

Healthy Forests = Clean Water

Alabama’s clean water begins in its forests. With 67% of the state covered by forestland and more than 132,000 miles of streams, rivers, and waterways, healthy forests are essential to healthy watersheds.

Alabama’s private landowners play a critical role in protecting clean water, managing wildlife, and supporting the forest products industry through sustainable forest management practices.

The Role of Landowners

  1. Protect Clean Water

  2. Manage Wildlife

  3. Use Sustainable Forest Management Practices

Long-Term Sustainability

In conjunction with programs like the American Tree Farm System, which instills an emphasis on managing timber, protecting clean water, recreational activities, and wildlife management, landowners demonstrate how responsible forest management can directly impact land far beyond a landowner’s property boundary. With a commitment to long-term sustainability, landowners are creating a positive impact across our state and the waters that flow through it.

Programs & Projects

Gulf Restore Program

Through the Gulf Restore Program, Alabama Forestry Foundation provides technical assistance to landowners to guide them in the right direction towards implementing sustainable forestry practices that improve water quality and strengthen working forests for future generations.

The Locust Fork Project

The Locust Fork Project helps protect one of Alabama’s most biologically significant watersheds by restoring forests, wetlands, and streamside habitats throughout the Turkey Creek and Locust Fork watershed.

Working alongside conservation partners and private landowners, the Alabama Forestry Foundation promotes sustainable forest management, improves water quality, restores wildlife habitat, and supports rare aquatic species found nowhere else in the world.
